Water Treatment Plant Operator

The purpose of this position is to perform intermediate technical work in the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant; does related work as required.  Work is performed with supervision during training. Limited supervision may be exercised over subordinate plant personnel. This is a 40 hour per week, with varied positions, shifts and limited benefits.

 

SOME ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors plant operations; adjusts plant operations; troubleshoots and maintains plant equipment; calibrates equipment; records and maintains plant operation records; performs laboratory tests.
  • Oversees proper functioning of water pumps, motors, filters and chemical feeders making adjustments as necessary to maintain proper flow of water.
  • Makes regular tours of plant ensuring proper functioning and plant operations.
  • Performs manual cleaning or preventive maintenance duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant.
  • General knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations.

 

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma/equivalent required
  • Ability to use Microsoft Windows, MS Office, understand charts and graphs and interpret results required
  • Hold and maintain a Tennessee Class D vehicle operator’s license
  • Tennessee certification as Grade III or IV Water Treatment Plant Operator preferred but not required. Must be able to obtain a minimum of a Grade III certification
  • Ability to work 10–12-hour schedule (that may include weekends and holidays)

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Ability to handle high-pressure water hoses
