Tennesee American Water is seeking a water utility professional to join our team in Chattanooga, TN! Our plant has the ability to produce up to 65 million gallons of safe, healthy and reliable drinking water every day and we need YOU to help provide that to the homes and businesses in the communities in which we serve. As laborer and relief plant operator, you will be responsible for carrying out a variety of tasks including daily ground maintenance, desluding basins, cleaning booster stations, and operating the drinking water plant when needed. Primary Role

Performs work assigned as a laborer. Works shifts covering for process technicians that may include nights or weekends.

Key Accountabilities

• Work as a process technician that may include nights or weekend shifts. (Occasional)
• Use weed eater, chainsaw, mower, forklift, and tractor (with various attachments) at various locations. (Frequent)
• Move hoses to basins and filtration units for de-sludging activities. Includes manual operations of fire hoses and hydrants. (Frequent)
• Perform janitorial tasks where directed.
• Use a mop, broom, shovel, and various hand tools as directed. (Frequent)
• Paint walls, floors, piping/fixtures, pumps, and motors using a manual roller, brush, or electric sprayer. (Frequent)
• Drive Company vehicles (including but not limited to cars, trucks, and vans) as required, including pulling and backing trailers. (Frequent)
• Performs other duties as assigned. (Frequent)
• Collecting and analyzing water samples (chlorine, pH, turbidity, etc.) (Frequent)

Knowledge/Skills

• Know the general practices of water treatment and distribution.
• Remain calm during emergency situations.
• Lifting/carrying items weighing over 50 lbs up and down steps or grades, including use of various hand tools and filter aide.
• Walk at heights and on narrow passageways.
• Work in confined areas/spaces.
• Work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
• Follow all established safety guidelines and procedures.
• Possess effective computer skills and understand data shown on a computer screen.
• General principles of water treatment and water distribution.
• Advanced arithmetic and geometry.
• Operating computer and SCADA systems and able to interpret data.

Experience/Education

• High School graduate or state-recognized Educational Equivalency Certificate.
• Specific vocational preparation includes an occupationally-significant combination of vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training, or essential experience.
• Water and/or wastewater utility experience is preferred

Work Environment

• All work is outside work in all types of weather and involving contact with water or other liquids.
• Atmospheric condition with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort.
• Exposure to ambient temperature extremes both hot and cold. Works near gasoline, oil, sewer, or substances in the soil.
• Potential exposure to poison ivy, oak, sumac, insects, etc.
• Frequently works around or with equipment that produces high decibel noise levels.

Certifications and Licenses

• Grade III TN Water Treatment license is required; Grade IV TN Water Treatment is preferred

Hours/Schedule

• Full-time
• Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm
• Shift/schedule subject to change when serving as the plant operator
